Yesterday (17 September), Berkmann hosted a distinguished wine tasting event at Woods Quay, featuring four esteemed Australian wineries. The event, Berkmann's first tasting “not on dry land,” marked a significant moment for the supplier, as it brought together four leading winemakers in a collaborative, flighted tasting by grape variety. This gathering exemplified the spirit of Australia’s premium wine industry, challenging the misconception that Australian wine is only synonymous with mass-produced, budget-friendly offerings.

It was a scary moment, at least in wine terms. There I was in the cellar at Domaine Leroy in Vosne-Romanée, tasting some of the most expensive reds on the planet. Meetings with Madame Bize are never relaxing. She combines hauteur with the ability to freeze a glass of Pinot Noir at 10 paces. People who have earned her displeasure are never granted access to her presence again.

The French call it an “embarras de richesses”. The closest we come in English is a confusing abundance or possibly too much of a good thing. But I really appreciated the choice and the thought behind it. Would I like to taste the producer’s wines out of a Riedel Veloce Syrah, a Spiegelau Definition or a Zalto Bordeaux glass? “Try them and see what you think,” I’ve been told. “We find that our wines show differently in each of them.”
